Tearsheet from Vancouver Magazine

Finally the April Issue of the Vancouver Magazine is out and running. A month ago I shot the Top Story which usually talks about a special Vancouverite.

I had the luck to work with Don Alder, a guitar legend in the fingerpicking style scene, acclaimed more abroad where he play for big crowds and is sponsored by Yahama, than in Canada where he usually plays on open mic nights for the pleasure of entertaining a few lucky ones.

Here’s below the tearsheet and some of the shots from the session:

March Madness

From bidding on a huge job (which eventually fell through…, I’ll get it next time) to shooting editorials for Vancouver Magazine and Western Living, all the way to preparing the campaign for a cycling organisation that will run on public transport in June here in Vancouver.

The above mentioned campaign will be a series of composites, with the background shot on location and the people in studio. We’re good to go for a day shoot in 10 days from now, and I managed to exploit one of the few sunny days last week to go out and shoot the backgrounds. The shot below was taken at the end of the day when the sun was almost set. At that stage I already had everything I needed for the job, but I couldn’t resist snapping a few frames of this unbelievable Vancouver skyline. Believe it or not, except for some sharpening and contrast, the picture is straight out of the camera.

Stay tuned for some more news, as I’m also active on film side of things shooting a documentary together with Gian Ant Media.

2012 is finally starting to kick in

A lot of potential great news on the horizon even if now it’s the time to “capitalize” on them.

I just joined Wonderful Machine which is great, the guys who run it are awesome. They’re building a great database of photographers around a good brand identity. They’re still very US based, which is why I’m not 100% sure that a lot of work will come out of it. But they’re on the right track and I have a good feeling about.

I just shot for Vancouver Magazine, the guys there are great and they were very happy with the result (which by the way will be on their April issue).

I’m working on a pro-bono adv campaign for a local cycling organisation with a talented Art Director (Terry Dee) and we’re planning to shoot it in March with the release date for the end of April (hopefully it will run on Vancouver public transportation and posters around the city).

I’ve also being contacted by an international NGO from Haiti about shooting a documentary there around the beginning of May. It’s not in the bag yet, especially as I’m going back to Europe for a couple of weeks in April, but the project is there and it would be an incredible opportunity that I’ll do my best to make happen.

I’ll leave you with a cool shot from the last photoshoot I did two weeks ago (photo by Adele Thomas, yours truly on the right, my wonderful assistant Corina on the left)

I mean, did you see me falling of the van while shooting the “eye” scene. You should, cause it’s quite funny…

Here’s the last short film/ad we shot for Omprakash, an international NGO that provides free volunteer opportunities around the world.

Inspired by Omprakash, Vance Walstra bikes the West Coast spreading the message of free international volunteer opportunities and the organization that changed his life. http://www.omprakash.org
Directed by Carlo Ricci (http://www.carloricci.com)
Produced by Adele Thomas (http://www.adelethomas.com)
Original soundtrack by Vance Walstra

Vance Walstra is a biker and a volunteer. He received an Omprakash Volunteer Grant which took him to Peru in 2008. Back in US he decided to ride his bike from Seattle to San Francisco and present Omprakash and its work to University students and professors. Today is the last day before completing his adventure. In a few hours he will arrive in San Francisco and while he cycles his last miles, the memories of his journey jumps to his mind in a roller coaster of emotions and thoughts. He finally see his experience and effort on the road as a metaphor for the universal and life changing feeling of accomplishment, discovery and learning that every volunteer goes through during their time spent working on volunteering projects.

Where is Omprakash going to take you?

A photograph shot a couple of years ago that I recently revisited. What the heck was I thinking/doing with photoshop before? Plus my old 5D sensor had more dust than the sand dune itself… Much better now.
